The Syrian military has obviously played a significant role in the Syrian Civil War.
This project deals with the societal and political background relating to strategic choices made during the conflict. The actions of the Syrian Power Structure is analyzed in a framework of both international (regional and global) environments, and the national set up at the start of the Civil War. The main questions are: What kind of military/power structure is the Syrian, how did its nature and its relations to the civilian political structure influence the transition from protest and uprising (‘Arab Spring’) to Civil War, and how did the international and diplomatic environment shape its behavior during the conflict.
