BUSINESS AS USUAL?: Identities, Culture and Military Interventions in Turkey

This thesis examines Turkish political-military culture, the ruling elite’s legitimacy and Turkish national identity focusing on military interventions during the years of the modern republic. The thesis concludes that the Turkish national identity throughout the history of the republic has been a top-down social constructivist project, which has encountered difficulties embracing the masses.
The study also shows that Turkey’s most stable political leaders have exhibited high levels of charismatic authority and that narratives and
identities (particularly Islamic identity) have been used extensively in the construction of a Turkish national identity. The military’s role in Turkish politics has evolved from being subjected to political control to being a separate entity above and beyond politics with the obligation to intervene if the core values of the republic were threatened. The study concludes that the military’s embrace of political Islam, strategic errors by the military leadership and AKP’s cunning employment democratic narratives emphasizing civilian control over the military has eroded its position as guardians of the republic and allowed for the rise of the authoritarian AKP regime. The study also concludes that the July 15th coup likely was specifically aimed against the Erdoğan administration, and that different groups in the military supported it.
