Chinese investments in Greenland. Promises and risks as seen from Nuuk, Copenhagen and Beijing.

Developments in 2016 have again placed China’s role and interests in Greenland
in the middle of discussions and tensions between Nuuk and Copenhagen
concerning the future of the Kingdom of Denmark. This chapter examines the
clash of expectations, interests and concerns in relations between Greenland,
Denmark and China. It shows the different, and increasingly conflicting,
assessments developing in Nuuk, Copenhagen and Beijing of promises and risks
associated with Chinese investments in Greenland. The chapter argues that such
developments have to be analysed in the broader context of growing Greenlandic
ambitions – and efforts – to resist Denmark’s emphasis on the Kingdom of
Denmark as one unitary foreign policy actor.
