From its birth in 2002, the African Union has developed into an important continental conflict management tool. However, the continental body has also come to realise that it is more often than not confronted with a militarily strategic asymmetric opponent, requiring a different mandate and military tools that have characterised traditional UN-led Peace Support Operations. For that reason, the organisation is in the process of setting up robust rapid military capabilities, already having deployed robust military contingents to the DR Congo, Nigeria and Somalia. However, what is the consequence of the increased use of force to stop conflict, and what results might this have for the future mandates of UN PSO operation?
