Afgangsprojekt, Master i Militære Studier (Masteruddannelse)
The introduction of the F-35 multi-mission aircraft will bring a lot of possibilities to the Air Force. A transformation is needed, though, in order to reach the full potential of the F-35.
This Master’s thesis aims at investigating how the Air Force should transform in order to become a 5th Generation Air Force. The methodology is based on an innovation approach to the transformation of military forces. Based on the analytical framework of “Krigsførelsens Kredsløb”, the thesis utilizes the framework of Farrell et al. with “Transforming Military Power”, Lotte Darsø’s theories on innovation and John Boyd approach to the decision cycle.
Based on the results of the analysis, the main conclusion is that massive disruptive innovation is needed in order to transform the Royal Danish Air Force into a 5th Generation Air Force. There should be a focus on the development of the ability to conduct network-centric and multi-domain operations. This would include a boost in intelligence capability, new approach to the planning of air operations and a focus on the Human Domain and cognitive capability including education and 5th Generation Mindset. This will secure a more agile approach to the OODA-loop and the conduct of operations. The transformation should be supported by a clear vision from the Chief of the Air Force – a Commanders Intent.
The transformation of the Air Force has the potential to become a driver for a transformation of the Danish Armed Forces into the future.
