The 21st century is being defined by an increasingly globalised world where the complexity of any given assignment has meant that the solutions necessarily need to be more flexible and agile. Postmodern leadership theory where employees are given more independence has been examined thoroughly from a civil perspective, however the purpose of this research paper is to investigate how an increased amount of autonomy will affect the learning process in the military profession. This research question is examined at the Royal Danish Military Academy in the autumn of 2018, where a hermeneutic analysis will investigate if Daniel Pink’s conceptual world of autonomy, mastery and purpose has contributed to the learning process at the academy. Four separate interviews with individuals enrolled or working at the academy will be conducted; questioned about how they have experienced autonomy. Their answers are analysed with the Danish Defence’s leadership philosophy from 2008 as a framework, characterising the military context. The findings from this paper are that in order to embrace autonomy in the military profession, it is necessary to create a mutual understanding of which context your subordinates can work within, so they can be given the autonomy to find a solution within the boundaries given. This is created through trustworthy relationships, which are built over time. This investigation contributes to the research of autonomy, which have been observed and implemented at the academy and provides the newly commissioned platoon commander with an analysis that he should be aware of if trying to apply autonomy to his new platoon. The study concludes that autonomy can have a positive impact on the learning process in a military profession if the time and context is given and recommends that future research should explore the area with a social constructive analysis or at a lower level of the military hierarchy, in order to conduct an indepth exploration of autonomies’ impact within the military profession.
