Purpose – This thesis is inspired by academic journals dealing with why small states choose to participate in missions not posing a direct threat to their territorial boundaries, and the benefits states derive from it. More specifically, the thesis explores whether the Danish defense industry benefits from the prestige that is achieved through a bandwagoning strategy towards the United States. This thesis is divided into three parts: 1) the reasons behind bandwagoning to understand the relationship between Denmark and the US, 2) empirical data based on interviews with experts 3) the challenges and threats to the status quo that Danish companies experience. Design – An examination of International Political theories was conducted to understand why Danish companies would experience advantages, while the qualitative study is applied and involves 15 experts with first-hand experience. To provide a widespread picture, the discussion will include theory, empirical data and other sources of information from academic journals and media. Findings – The findings indicate a correlation between Denmark’s contribution to US-led missions and advantages that Danish companies are experiencing, albeit primarily in the initial phase of a business relationship. These advantages are not only based on the prestige that Denmark has achieved, but also indirectly through other factors like the level of technological and innovative advancement in Denmark, the increased diplomatic and political access, and the fact that the Danish military uses soft- and hardware from these Danish companies. The findings suggest that they experienced transition to American market conditions rather quickly, and needed to perform on other parameters. A discussion was made to map the threats and challenges in a strategic and industrial perspective, and found several factors that directly or indirectly could harm their status and eliminate the advantages that the companies benefit from today. Recommendations – Further research could be undertaken to come up with specific recommendations, to handle the threats and challenges identified, and specifically initiatives to support sub-tier companies’ traction in the US should be identified.
