This project studies the influence of doctrine on the mechanized infantry company’s ability to integrate the threat constituted by UAS. The project contains the following components: Two-part analysis of gathered empirical material, a discussion of the findings, a conclusion and finally the perspective of the findings. The theory of the project is based on the Danish Mechanized Infantry Company Doctrine and the U.S. Counter UAS doctrine. By using the model “The Doctrinal Utility Span” by H. Høiback and his book “Understanding Military Doctrine”, the project outlines the functionality of a doctrine and observes three major functionalities: Doctrine as a Tool of Command, Education or Change. Through an interview with the author, the defining elements of the three are respectively studied. By then applying a method adapted from political science called “reflexive/formative index-construction”, the project constructs two types of index, through an analysis of the gathered empirical material, based on the method “Open Coding”. The empirical material for constructing the formative index, are gathered through interviews with Danish Army Officers, who has firsthand experience with integrating the threat constituted by UAS. The intention of applying this methodology is to create the most valid findings, by cross-referencing the formative and reflexive indexes. The project finds that the Danish doctrine has a core functionality as a tool of education and that the U.S. doctrine as a tool of command. By combining the formative and reflexive indexes, a matrix is created to illustrate the influence of doctrine on behavior in the field. The projects key findings are that a tool of education will allow for a higher quality of solutions in general.
However, there are caveats: the tool of education requires extensive training of the officers to allow for a buildup of experience. Without this is experience, the quality deteriorates rapidly. Furthermore, the span of solutions is based entirely on the officer’s ability to understand the causal effects of enemy actions and intention of using UAS. The tool of command ensures that action is taken as prescribed by the doctrine and allows the officer to implement solutions that integrate the threat immediately and without prior training. However, the tool of command has an inherent weakness in that it does not adapt rapidly to changing circumstances in the field. As such, a key finding of the project is that the perceived available time for training the threat-integration of UAS should be the determining factor when deciding on the direction of doctrinal development in the future.
