This study is about doctrine and counterinsurgency on the company-level. Should the Danish army develop a national doctrine of counterinsurgency on the company-level and can the 28-articles but forth by David Kilcullen be a basis of such doctrine? The study applies a social constructivist approach and seeks to explore that question through a closer examination and discussion of ‘Twenty-Eight Articles: Fundamentals of Company-Level Counterinsurgency’ by Kilcullen together with a supporting article about the development and utility of a Danish doctrine of land warfare by Susanne Kiholm Lund. The model of the anatomy of military doctrine by Harald Høiback is used as an important theory.
The study finds that culture is an important element in the development and implementation of new doctrine as culture helps to shape military theory. Furthermore, factors as the local populations as the center of gravity, an environment-centric approach and communication with the population seems to be some of the important factors in counterinsurgency, not covered in depth by the current infantry doctrine on the company-level.
The study concludes that it could be beneficial for the Danish army to develop a doctrine concerning counterinsurgency on the company-level to assist the company commander however, counterinsurgency could for example also be dealt with through better training of Danish soldiers. Concerning Kilcullen’s 28-articles, they could be a start for a further examination of the mechanisms of counterinsurgency on the company-level.
