In the Danish Army, there is a variety of understandings of the phenomenon of Doctrine. From an organizational level, we have failed to impart a common and deep understanding of the application and categorization of doctrine. On that account, the doctrine for land warfare and underlying publications have been misused. The result is an Army that focuses on procedures instead of intentions.
Using the concepts put forth by Norwegian Officer Harald Høiback, this paper will identify, categorize and apply the Danish doctrine for land warfare as a tool for command. It will then identify and confirm existing discourse in the ranks. Lastly, it will apply the concepts to the challenges our professional Army units face. It will do so by analysing interviews of current Company Commanders, focusing on the everyday use and application of doctrine.
This study shows how the Danish Army has not succeeded in creating a deep rooting of the epistemological aspects of doctrine. Especially how to view doctrine.
This study has found that it can be beneficial for Company Commanders to rethink how they conduct their training before deploying on missions to conduct military operations. Especially how using more unpredictable opponents in training, can help.
In conclusion, Company Commanders and higher levels should revise how the Army conducts training and work on establishing a doctrine as a tool of education for our professional army units. By doing so, the Army will be better prepared to fight according to our doctrine of command.
