In the new deployable brigade structure in the Danish army, the Reconnaissance Battalion of Gardehusarregimentet will be responsible for Brigade reconnaissance, instead of Battalion reconnaissance as previous. This new task comes with new challenges for all levels at the Reconnaissance Battalion, also for the equipment. Up until the summer of 2019, the vehicle chosen to be used by Danish reconnaissance Troop was the MOWAG EAGLE V. This has been cancelled, and the Danish army is now looking for a new reconnaissance vehicle. This study examines what characteristics the coming vehicle should have, based on Danish doctrine as theory, and empirical data from field experts.
The study evaluates the vehicle characteristics in two tactical activities for the reconnaissance Troop as part of the reconnaissance Squadron, within the Brigade’s deliberate attack. The tactical activities are Zone and Route reconnaissance. The characteristics are evaluated in five subcategories: Mobility, Firepower, Protection, Sensors and Logistical footprint. The analysis is subdivided into two smaller analysis, one for each tactical activity concluding in a set of characteristics that the theory and field experts find best for the tactical activity.
The study finds the vehicle demands for the two tactical activities varies on a majority of characteristics. Route reconnaissance requiring a high armor Protection and Firepower level. Zone reconnaissance requiring high Mobility and low Logistical footprint.
The two conclusions from above are then discussed and evaluated to determine what set of characteristics the new reconnaissance vehicle should have, to best support the undertaking of both the tactical activities in the brigade’s attack.
The study finds that the vehicle that solves both tactical activities best should have a high Mobility and low Logistical footprint to be able to undertake operations deep in the enemy Rear. The vehicle should support external sensors to increase the reconnaissance Troop’s situational awareness and improve their ability to focus their effort. The vehicle should be open to allow the soldiers to use their senses while in the vehicle. The Firepower and Armor should be maximized, as long as it does not infringe on previously mentioned capabilities.
