This study examines how mission command can be seen from a cultural perspective. Mission command is often discussed and referred to among military leaders. This can, for example, be seen at the Danish Military Academy, where mission command is a term used in both leadership- and tactics classes. In leadership classes, students often talk about forming a mission command culture, in order to apply mission command on the battlefield. Based on this thesis, culture might be the way to fully understand mission command. The study is based on a deductive method which seeks to hypothesize how mission command can be seen from a cultural perspective. By using Cameron and Quinns’ “The Competetive Values Framework”, the study defines the interrelation between the individual prerequisites and specific cultural types mentioned in the “Organizational Cultural Assessment Instrument”. This is followed by an interpretation of the different units in the army, in order to pinpoint how the soldier is integrated and how he adopts the prerequisites for mission command. The hypothesis is then tested by using questionnaires and interviews regarding culture, leadership styles- and focus’ in an army unit. The study shows that the prerequisites can be linked up individually with different types of culture, but also that the culture in an army unit cannot be determined as one specific culture. The commanders in an army unit tend to perceive the culture primarily as a clan- and adhocracy culture, why they tend to focus their actions and leadership styles towards building mutual trust and delegating responsibilities to lower levels. The privates, however, perceives the culture primarily as a market culture, which can be seen as a result of their task-orientated job function. This difference in cultural perceptions makes sure that most of the prerequisites are fulfilled in order to support mission command.
To sum up: The study concludes that mission command can be seen as a phenomenon, wherein the prerequisites are fulfilled through different cultural types. Caused by internal integration, roles and functions, individuals perceive tasks differently based on different values, which in the end makes sure that every prerequisite for mission command is fulfilled.
