Research and teaching information

My research agenda sets out to explore two primary tracks: a) cross-cultural dynamics in training missions (and in time in enhanced forward presences as well) in relation to cross-regimental mission formations, multinational coalition forces, local security forces, and civil populations; and b) soldier and veteran lives within contexts of the military profession, military operations and military cultures.

Empirically, my research is based on ethnographic fieldwork with Danish soldiers on the ground. Methodically, I am devoted to visual anthropology, to a phenomenological first-person perspective, and to carrying out fieldwork as an ‘embedded anthropologist’ before, during and after deployment (OIR and ISAF thus far).

Analytically, I engage in questions of cultural encounters and conflict narratives; recognition and mission experiences; politics of remembrance and war memories; motivation and sense-making; identity and subjectivity; body, gender, and materiality; lawfare and ethics/morality; virtues and self-cultivation; violence and pain; simulation and the real; boredom and risk-seeking behavior. Theoretically, my research is situated in the fields of tension between military anthropology, political anthropology, psychological anthropology, and philosophical anthropology.
