The Nordic small states encountering intensified great power politics in the Arctic - an analysis of assessments and strategies in the Nordic capitals

Project: Types of projects

Great power politics in the Arctic is intensifying. Both the Arctic great powers, the U.S. and Russia, and the self-proclaimed near-Arctic great power China are assigning growing geostrategic and geoeconomic importance to the region and are busy strengthening their Arctic presence. How are the Nordic small states determined to maintain the Arctic as a low-tension region with strong multilateral institutions to react? This project sets out to analyze the differences in assessments and strategies in the Nordic capitals with the overall aim of discussing whether the Nordic small states can learn from each other and coordinate to a higher degree when dealing with intensified great powers in the Arctic.
