Afgangsprojekt, (Diploma)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine, how a possible Danish participation with combat soldiers in the ongoing conflict in Mali, is in line with the Danish foreign policy and security strategy. The thesis starts by examining how the conflict started, by looking at the country from a fragile state perspective, and thereby assessing how a foreign intervention, will be most successful in aiding the country. Secondly an analysis of the possible operations and collaborators of a Danish participation, and a historical look at the ends, ways and means of Danish cooperation in international operations, will lead to a discussion of a Danish presences in Mali.
The thesis finds that the country is fragile on several point and will be unable to rectify the situation without foreign assistance. The Danish government can take part in one of two operations currently active in Mali, Barkhane and MINUSMA. The two operations focus’ on different perspectives of the conflict and both play an important role in resolving the conflict. However, both of them also have difficulties, which the length of the conflict is a testament to. The two operations are compatible with the Danish way of war, but because of the recent years reluctant to use combat soldiers on the ground and the government’s intention to strengthen the UN collaboration the most likely participation in Mali will take place as part of a UN operation.
