The aim of this paper is to investigate the possibilities of implementing a flexible concept on the replacement for the Danish Arctic patrol vessel - THETIS-class. Furthermore, it is sought to investigate the correlation between the implementation of flexibility and the ability for the vessel to act resilient – act resilient meaning the possibility for the vessel to be able to adjust its functioning in the wake of changes and disturbances, so it is able to continue to perform its core function even after this disruption.

This is accomplished through an analysis using the American capability model; DOTMLPF (Doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership, personnel and facilities). Each category in the model is analyzed in order to investigate the shortcomings in regards of implementing a flexible concept, and the possible contributions to the ability to act resilient. This is carried out on the basis of qualitative interviews and text as data including organizational charts, job postings, doctrines, and documents published by the Danish Defense regarding the organization’s desires. This showed several actions to be taken into account for the implementation of a flexible concept to be effective and successful. Some of the most important findings worth highlighting are related to the development of new doctrine for flexibility setting up requirements for the training of reconfiguration on the vessels, the separation of the crew into a specialist crew and a platform crew, and the creation of a reserve capacity with flexible modules in the Arctic region. By this, the vessel is able to use the flexible concept in all the aspects of the DOTMLPF-model, and hereby also a military capability. The required actions showed to be in good correlation with the ability for the vessel to act resilient. However, resilience is to be proved in a real crisis situation before definitively proven.

The use of documents as a mean of understanding organizational realities have proven to have certain limitations, since the documents only show the “documentary reality” which probably do not represent the actual reality in the organization. With this in mind, the findings in this paper is not wrong but rather incomplete, and further studies with other sources of data is needed to consolidate the conclusions of this paper.
