During the journey from recruitment through education and onwards to active duty, an officer will meet several narratives regarding his role in the armed forces. Whether these narratives adhere to one another might influence the persons understanding of himself and affect his ability to assume the identity of a military leader. This study sets out to analyse these narratives in an attempt to identify any discrepancies by comparison. In addition, I seek to cover in what way this might affect a newly educated officer in his first time working as a leader in order for him to avoid conflicts.
This study was conducted by analysing the recruitment campaign run at the launch of the new Danish officer’s education in 2015 and the environment at The Royal Danish Military Academy specific to the army. These narratives were then compared to the viewpoints and expectations of privates from army units specific to the combat engineers. Data was obtained through one-on-one interviews with a small number of key personnel, representing the collective narrative through expert knowledge.
The role of a newly educated army officer was found to deviate slightly between recruitment and the military academy. The recruitment campaign only represented a very narrow and one-sided narrative which didn’t fully encompass the expectations and focus points at the academy. Significant discrepancies were found in relation to expectations in army units, where very few elements of the officer’s identity matched the profile from either recruitment or the academy.
In order to prevent the gap between taught and expected identities from negatively affecting an officer’s leadership, this study concludes the need for the officer to lay aside one’s value of the academic and address one’s subordinates with a genuine interest in order to learn from their experience before attempting to claim any leadership role. Failing to do so will result in the officer losing control of his platoon and being unable to maintain an effective work relation with the unit.
